Think about trees and crops together

Observe a long-term project before planting.

Draw the actual site

Locate uses, paths, existing trees and places where water collects. Add access constraints and boundaries whose status needs checking. A drawing is easier to revise than an established tree.

Think across seasons

A tree changes over time. Before choosing a species, investigate its needs and future size, then consider possible interactions with crops and neighbouring uses. A promising association on a diagram needs checking in your setting.

Record decisions

In your journal, note the question, consulted source and proposed decision. Have significant choices checked by an appropriate professional when needed.

Begin with observation

Take private photographs of shaded areas at different times. You gain useful information without buying or planting yet.
