Work before the visible work
Shopping starts before entering a store. Someone checks supplies, plans meals, considers constraints and knows when to return. When one person carries out the task while another plans and reminds, responsibility is only partly shared.
Our proposal is to describe a whole task before dividing it. This is an organisational experiment to agree on together, rather than a rule for every family.
Choose one task
Start with something limited: laundry, an appointment or a recurring meal. List invisible steps as well as the final action. Who anticipates? Who finds information? Who decides? Who does it? Who checks what comes next?
Compare your lists without keeping score. A missing step may reflect information that was never shared. Define what “finished” means, together with any safety, budget or timing constraints.
Transfer autonomy
The person taking responsibility needs the relevant information and resources. They also need room to arrange the task in their own way within the agreed boundaries. If every detail requires approval, responsibility stays centralised.
With a baby, illness or an unusual week, the agreement may need to change. Make backup arrangements explicit. A division of work can be clear without being permanent.
Review the experiment
After a week, ask what needed reminders, what was missing and whether sharing created extra monitoring. Adjust one step and try again.
