What the system does

Domestic planted treatment combines filter media, microorganisms and plants. It is not simply reeds planted in a pond. Water distribution, the media, aeration and maintenance matter. Clear-looking discharge is not drinking water.

Start with the site

Record country, municipality, building use, occupancy patterns, slope, ground conditions, groundwater, access and the possible discharge route. Keep rainwater separate from wastewater planning. Identify every wastewater stream, including greywater when dry toilets are used.

Local checks before excavation

In France the SPANC reviews design and checks construction. Ask about its process and required studies before digging. For an approved proprietary system, check the exact model, capacity and current official user guide. Altering media or flow paths can change performance. Elsewhere, contact the relevant local authority.

Reading the diagram

The illustration separates collection, treatment and discharge. It is a functional diagram, not a generic sizing plan: no standard area per occupant, filter depth or pipe gradient is supplied. Systems differ in treatment stages and pretreatment. Follow the chosen system's design and instructions.

Building and maintaining

Gather site drawings, studies, design review, operating instructions and quotations including excavation and discharge arrangements. Arrange construction inspection before covering components. Keep maintenance access.

Use a log for interventions, distribution points, flows, planting and anomalies. Follow the system's permitted uses. Have unusual odour, overflow or standing water assessed; do not divert untreated discharge elsewhere. Budget for inspections, servicing and electrical equipment where needed.
