Define the autonomy you want

Before selecting solar panels or a tank, describe the services you need: comfort, water, electricity, budget, resilience and mutual support. Identify outside services you will continue using. Improvement does not require total independence.

Observe and reduce demand

Record consumption, seasons, occupancy and maintenance. Identify essential services and difficult periods. Assess siting, shading, insulation and ventilation with competent support. Separate potable and non-potable water uses and have installations checked for the local context.

Map relationships

Connect resources, uses and outputs: rain, mains water and wastewater; generation, possible storage and appliances; garden, food and reserves. Include the people who observe, maintain and repair. Plan backup and a simple way to detect faults.

A memory from Sylvain

“I knew Patrick Baronnet well and invited him to a programme during Alternatiba Nantes 2014.” This personal memory informs the wish to share the Maison Autonome experience and connect housing with cooperation. It is not an endorsement of Permah by Patrick Baronnet.

Patrick Baronnet wrote De la maison autonome à l’économie solidaire. The Héol association presents the Maison Autonome projects and publications. Historical experience can inspire reflection; assess technical details against current needs and local requirements.

Take a first step

Choose one measurable improvement: monitor a use, share a tool, plan renovation or visit a place. Include capital cost, maintenance, replacement and time. In shared housing, agree who decides, pays and maintains. Technical systems depend on a workable organisation.
