Reuse what already suits the job
Start by finding the nursery pots and seed trays you own. Sort them into sound and clean, needing cleaning, and damaged. Reject containers that held chemicals or have an uncertain history. A clean food container can be a trial pot if its shape, strength and drainage work. The purpose is to reuse an available object, rather than buy packaging for the project.
Set up a small sowing station
Gather pots, a tray to catch water, suitable seed compost, seeds, labels and a pencil. RHS guidance makes drainage essential and recommends cleaning pots before sowing. Wash and rinse reused containers and remove old debris before filling them. If a container does not drain, preferably choose a nursery pot that already has holes. Any modification must leave safe edges and a stable base.
Begin with one batch
1. Choose one crop and read the packet for timing, depth, temperature and transplanting needs. A reused container does not change a plant’s requirements.
2. Check that drainage holes are clear and water can reach the tray without leaving the pot standing in it.
3. Label the cultivar and sowing date before sowing. Add an identifier if comparing containers.
4. Fill with suitable growing medium, firm gently and sow at the supplier’s stated depth. Random garden soil is not automatically a suitable seed-starting medium.
5. Water gently and provide the light and temperature required by the crop. Check moisture instead of giving every container a fixed amount of water.
Observe before expanding
Record seeds sown, seedlings emerging and difficulties. If comparing pots, keep the cultivar and growing medium the same where possible. An observed difference does not prove that the container caused it. The trial is primarily a way to discover what works in your conditions.
When seedlings are ready, check space and transplanting instructions. Some reused containers hold too little growing medium for keeping a seedling for long. The Permah calendar can store your chosen date; planting checks also consider soil, frost and hardening.
Turn it into an accessible workshop
For a neighbour workshop, prepare containers and labels beforehand. Offer short roles such as filling, sowing, recording and tidying. Agree who will water afterwards and what happens when they are away. Photograph trials with their dates, then share successes and failures in the community. A record of experience remains useful even when germination disappoints.

Garden observations
TFA Dostmann 19.1006
Analogue thermometer designed to measure soil temperature.
Uses & things to check
For adding an on-site observation to your planting calendar.
Take repeated readings at the sowing depth. Temperature alone does not determine a planting date.
